This problem seems to be related to fonts with Compact Font Format (CFF) based outlines. A decent font manager like MainType will show the exact character set.

I know people who use a font manager might appreciate font properties like Panose, font family classification, and vendor id.

Those weight values and descriptions come from the OpenType specification. In FontCreator you can set the subfamily name as located on the Extended tab. Most fonts seems to use Semibold:
