This problem seems to be related to fonts with Compact Font Format (CFF) based outlines. A decent font manager like MainType will show the exact character set.3 -

Those weight values and descriptions come from the OpenType specification. In FontCreator you can set the subfamily name as located on the Extended tab. Most fonts seems to use Semibold:1 -
